Marvel Cinematic Universe’s The Marvels isn’t set to come out until this fall, but the three stars of the film—Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris—sat down for an interview (before the SAG-AFTRA strike) to talk about the movie and, more generally, what makes superheroes so compelling.
In the group interview with Entertainment Weekly, Vellani (pictured above), who made her MCU debut in the excellent Disney+ series Ms. Marvel as the high schooler Kamala Khan, summed up what makes superheroes so great, actually. Here’s what she said:
“We’re really lucky because we have such a plethora of female characters with real flaws and real arcs. Time and time again, it’s proven that not only do these stories have such a robust fan base, but they sell. Marvel has always championed that idea of finding this idealized version of yourself through their characters—a version of yourself that can fly in space or stop a train with one hand. I think that aspiration to be greater than who you are is such a universal feeling, regardless of gender identity. I hope people recognize that and find ways to identify with all of our characters.”
Vellani’s older co-stars heartily supported her comments, with Larson saying, “We should just let Iman answer all these questions.”
The article is full of other good tidbits, including the news that The Marvels will not only see the return of Goose the cat/flerkin, but also a kindle of kittens! (Larson, sadly, could accept no flerkin love as she is extremely allergic to cats; every time you see her onscreen with a furry friend, that feline is all CGI.)
We can see all the flerkins when The Marvels premieres in theaters on November 10, 2023.
